Myself, along with many SORD customers, live for gathering around a fish cleaning table at the end of the day. One thing I've learned from spending time at various fish cleaning stations is that having the right knife for the job is essential. As a teenager, I even got yelled at for bringing the wrong knife on a trip with some extremely salty fishermen. Not having the right knife can lead to a lot of frustration and some unsightly fillets after spending 12 hours on the water chasing fish.
Over the past five years, I’ve talked to a wide range of customers, from billfish mates to inshore captains, and one consistent request has been for a knife that flexes all the way down to the fish cleaning table while still holding a sharp edge. So, we set out to design a knife that meets this need, upholding all the SORD tenets of edge retention, corrosion resistance, and a lifetime guarantee.
After eight months of testing different sizes, shapes, and flexibility levels, the 8” Super Flex emerged. It’s the upgrade that all of "The Crazy Ones" have been waiting for. Given that this is our most significant product launch since our first knife, we decided to commemorate it with a special blacked-out handle, dubbing it “The Blackout Knife.”
The Blackout Knife’s Specs: A Fish Cleaner’s Dream
How often have you pulled the boat back to the dock with a pile of wahoos, only to realize you only have knives as stiff as the chef’s knife in your kitchen block? Probably too many times.
That’s precisely why we created the 8” Super Flex Blackout Knife. It offers the flexibility needed to get the maximum amount of meat off the bone and cleanly separate the meat from the skin.
Surgical Precision with a Thin Blade
This knife features a blade edge measuring only 3/4", making it shorter than any blade we’ve released before. This provides surgical precision, allowing you to efficiently work through piles of smaller reef fish or separate the skin from a large pelagic fillet with ease.
We chose 5Cr15MoV steel for this knife to ensure it can quickly be sharpened to a razor-sharp edge. You won't have to struggle to get an edge back on this blade like many lower-end fillet knives.
A Limited Edition Handle
The Blackout Knife features a full-tang design, meaning the metal from the blade extends the entire length of the knife, covered with a blacked-out version of SORD’s traditional G10 gun-grip handle. It’s not just for looks—the handle remains secure when wet and won’t retain blood, saltwater, or grime.
The all-black G10 handle sets this knife apart from the rest of the SORD lineup. It was designed to be a legacy knife, built to withstand the test of time so you can pass it down to your kids and grandkids one day.
Final Thoughts
We know this new knife isn’t a groundbreaking concept, but having one you can truly rely on when you get back to the dock is. After all, why invest in an expensive blade if a cheaper knife can cut just as well?
That’s the most common misconception: cheaper knives don’t cut as well as SORD knives.
They might perform adequately the first time you put together a nice box of fish, but over time they become unusable, and you end up tossing them and buying replacements. You’ve invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in pursuing your greatest passion—you deserve a knife that can withstand the same level of abuse you put yourself and your gear through.
The Blackout Knife drops on 11.23.24. Buy one for yourself or the resident fish cleaner on your boat, and we’ll catch you back at the fish cleaning station.
